“KRAMPUS” by Mark Redfield is part of a fun gallery show at Side Street Studio Arts in Elgin, Il. Now through Christmas. “Krampuslauf”, or “Krampus Run” is a new show of art works based on the mythological Germanic creature Krampus, who seems to be gaining cultural ground around the U.S., at least as an excuse to party during the holiday season and break the usual monotony of eggnog and Santa Claus.

In German-speaking Alpine folklore, Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure who punishes children during the Christmas season who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards well-behaved ones with gifts. Regions in the Austrian diaspora feature similar figures and, more widely, Krampus is one of a number of Companions of Saint Nicholas in regions of Europe. The origin of the figure is unclear; some folklorists and anthropologists have postulated a pre-Christian origin for the figure.

Traditional parades in which young men dress as Krampus, such as the Krampuslauf  (Krampus run), occur annually in most Alpine towns. Krampus is featured on holiday greeting cards called Krampuskarten.

Redfield’s large cartoon, an acrylic painting on canvas, was invited to the show by John LaFleur. LaFleur worked to bring Krampus to Elgin back almost five years ago by introducing it to (Elgin-based artist) Dave Metzger. LaFleur said, "It launched with the first Krampuslauf (which translates to Krampus Run) themed art show at Side Street Studio back in 2010." The show is run by LaFleur, David Metzger, and Side Street owners Erin Rehberg and Tanner Melvin.

This year, 2015, the month-long exhibit of Krampus-themed artwork includes about three dozen pieces from artists including David Bremer, Sam Burt, Erin Cramer, John French, Mitch O'Connell, Mark Redfield and the duo BAM!
